‘Unfold’ School Counselling Services

Unfold Counselling Service is at present based in a couple of local Secondary schools in the Bournemouth area providing one-to-one counselling, Group Workshops and some teacher training sessions.

One-to-One counselling

Young people can receive confidential counselling for issues such as low self-esteem, anger problems, self-harm, eating disorders etc. The service works within the school’s individual child protection policies to ensure that the young people are safe and protected. The service works to put an effective referral system in place in which head teachers, school nurses, SEN workers and child protection officers can use to ensure that those in need of counselling support receive it. Parental consent forms are then issued home to parents/carers.

Confidentiality is explained to the young person at the beginning of therapy and an agreement drawn up. If the young person is at risk of significant harm or knows of anyone else who may be, confidentiality will only then be broken to an assigned member of school staff who can then take appropriate action. In order for therapy to be most effective for the young person it is essential that the therapeutic space is safe and secure for them.

An agreement is drawn up between Unfold counselling and the school before the service can go ahead. Reports help feedback the progress made by the counselling service.

Group Work

Workshops are designed around the specific needs of the young people in the schools. In particular the workshop entitled “I just can’t control my…ANGER” has been very successful in: helping to raise self-awareness for individuals, giving them the tools to manage their anger and creating a safe place for the members of the group to share their own experiences. At the end of the six-week workshops the group evaluate the effectiveness of the course, which in turn gets fed back to the school.

Unfold Counselling is committed to coming alongside young people to empower them to make personal and situational changes where possible. It is a service that prides itself on seeing young people come to a better place of wholeness, by encouraging them to first acknowledge their thoughts and feelings. It aims to create a safe, non-threatening environment in which personal issues can be explored and hopefully resolved to some degree, thus enabling clients to reach a higher potential, personally, socially and academically.
